Ever wondered why El Cerrito has a Human Relations Commission, its own NAACP chapter, and the best Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in the Bay? The answer lies in the membership of the St. Peter Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Founded in 1953, St. Peter's CME is El Cerrito's only historically African-American congregation. Come learn about the church's central role in shaping our city through seven-plus decades of education, charity, and activism.

Church leader and El Cerrito Historical Society board member Patricia Durham will host the celebration, which starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 28th at St Peter's CME (5324 Cypress Avenue). Light refreshments will be served.
