Genealogy Al Fresco: How to Document and Learn from Gravesites

  • Sunset Cemetery 101 Colusa Avenue El Cerrito, CA, 94530 United States (map)

Calling all genealogists, photographers, and graveyard wanderers! Join us at Sunset Cemetery, where you’ll learn how to use death records to supercharge your genealogical research— and also how YOUR photographs of graves might assist others across the world.

Death certificates and cemetery records often contain valuable clues about family, lives, and history. Websites like Find a Grave make this information accessible anywhere. They also allow researchers—professional or hobbyist—to submit requests for specific sites to be photographed by volunteers.

Professional genealogist Melanie Proctor will discuss how to utilize these valuable databases for your research, as well as best practices for photographing gravesites as a volunteer. After we learn what grave stones can teach us and how best to document them, we’ll fan out across the cemetery to fulfill pending photo requests—or just watch the process, as you prefer!

Meet us at 11AM in the parking lot across from the chapel of Sunset View Cemetery, at Colusa Avenue at Fairmount.
