Chung Mei Home Lantern Slides

The Chung Mei Home was a group residence for boys of Chinese descent whose parents could not care for them. Dr. Charles R. Shepherd, an Englishman who had previously worked as a missionary in China, established the home in Berkeley in 1923. Twelve years later, seeking more space, he moved the home to 1600 Elm Street in El Cerrito. By the time Chung Mei closed in 1954, it had provided a home for more than eight hundred boys.

This collection of Chung Mei Home slides was gifted to the society by Phil Chan, who lived at Chung Mei in his youth. Please also see the society’s digitized collection of Chung Mei Chronicles, a monthly newsletter produced by the residents.

If you wish to learn more about the Chung Mei home, the society maintains a rich collection of materials in the Shadi Room archives.
